Exporting a PDF

Once you've designed your newspaper, the last step is to export a print-ready PDF and upload it to your account. To make sure that your newspaper is ready to print, follow our export guide.

How do I export from InDesign?

Use the PDF/X-1a:2001 preset. Export as pages, not spreads, and make sure your document includes the correct margins, bleed (if needed) and CMYK colour.

Why is my PDF the wrong size after exporting?

Some software changes the page size during export. Check that your PDF is set to export at the original size.

What is bleed and do I need it?

Bleed is extra artwork around the edge of the page that gets trimmed off. Only minis and midis require bleed. Set this up in your document settings before you start designing.

What if my images are in RGB?

Convert them to CMYK before or during export. Our press will automatically convert RGB and spot colours to CMYK, but you will have more control over the results if you do this yourself.

Should I include crop marks?

No, please export your PDF without any printer marks.

What does ‘reading order’ mean?

Pages should be arranged how the reader will see them when reading from left to right – so page 1 is the front cover, page 2 is the inside front cover and so on. We’ll take care of the imposition.

Can I add bleed when I export my mini?

No, it needs to be set up in your document from the start.

Why can’t I convert spot colours to CMYK in InDesign?

If the ‘All spots to process’ option is greyed out, that means you don’t have any spot colours left to convert – you’re good to go.

Will the PDF checker catch design mistakes?

No, it checks technical issues like margins and image resolution, but not typos or layout problems.
